For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
~ Ephesians 2:10
If you've found my site, you probably already want something different for your children. So many of today's educational options start far from viewing children as God's workmanship. Without that view, at best, these options create frustration and overwhelm. At worst, they become training grounds for anti-Christian thought, harming children and undermining the very families they need to thrive.
Real Learning Atlanta is about helping families guide their children to and through educational option that bring real learning - learning based on who they truly are - precious in God's sight and created for His purposes. It's about nurturing the gifts and talents of both parents and students, including those with learning differences, who so often feel lost in traditional schooling and lose sight (or never even catch a glimpse of) just how perfect they are in God's view.
Whether you are embarking on home education for the first time, considering other educational options, or just wanting to talk to a seasoned Mom and educator who can come alongside to help you on your journey, I'm here. Give me a call today to see how I can help.
Real -Adjective. Actual, and true, agreeing with known facts (reality.)
Real Learning anchored in these realities:
Christ is Lord of all.
Children and parents are His workmanship, created for His purposes.
Learning should provide knowledge and tools you can use
Learning happens all the time whether planned or not
Many have gone before and found tried and true resources and methods to equip Christian students well. It'sensible to take advantage of the blessings of their knowledge.
About Dr. Cindy
As long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with how people learn, from my early days of wrangling a reluctant little brother into impromptu lessons, through over 30 years teaching, tutoring and mentoring students to give them the solid roots they need for lifelong learning.
I hold a master’s degree in Instructional Design from George Washington University, as well as a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology from Regent University. In addition, I've trained in both the Orton Gillingham method and the National Institute for Learning Develpment method for dyslexia remediation, and earned extensive continuing education credits in areas such as dyscalculia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and twice exceptionality. Beyond credentials, I have years of experience with many students.
Throughout all of my own teaching and learning, I've gotten a good sense of what works and what doesn't for many different types of learners and their families, as well as a healthy respect for the need to be flexible in any approach. It turns out there are many ways to reach educational goals, once you've defined them well. For me, I believe the goal of education for any Christian student is the provision of the best knowledge and tools that recognize who they are in God's eyes and prepare them to live out their God given purpose.
I've home educated my own five children, taught in a public school classroom, created corporate training materials, taught in various home education co-ops, taught at an online private Christian academy, and privately tutored and mentored many students that have become family. Even within our own family, what worked for one child didn't always work for another, and many seasons (including seasons of health and family issues including divorce) called for quite different approaches, although our goal remained the same.
Today, all five of my chidlren are grown, with the two youngest still attending college. The second youngest is preparing to graduate from college this year and, hopefully, will head to medical school, while the "baby" looks forward to graduating in 2024. My oldest is living and working in Germany, pursuing a Ph.D after earning a BA from MIT and a MS from Georgia Tech, while my second oldest has found a place in the world of tech after graduating with a degree in classics and realizing the Lord had other things in store. My third child, who graduated form our home school, and was hit a year later with schizophrenia, lives with me and serves as a blessing for those who get to know him and his gentle spirit.
Today, with Christian parents pulling their children out of schools that do not honor God or the dignity of students made in His image, my passion is to help those parents trust their instincts and stop worrying. Despite all the hype and advertising, there is no one perfect way for children to learn and there are many ways to bring out the strengths of ALL children. I know it and have seen it over and over again. I'd love to come alongside your family on your journey to finding and implementing the right approach for your children.
